West Wind Farm Site Visit

Join Meridian Energy for an exclusive behind-the-scenes visit to West Wind, one of New Zealand’s largest and most productive wind farms. Since 2009 West Wind has been generating electricity right on the doorstep of Wellington.

Location: West Wind Farm, Mākara

Date: Wednesday 21 October

Time: 1pm – 4pm

Cost: $25.00pp (NZD incl. GST) - Donation to Citizen Advice Bureau

How to Register: Sign up during the NZSA 2026 registration process

Located west of the city at Mākara, the funnelling effect of Cook Strait means the site has strong and consistent wind speeds, making it an ideal place for a wind farm. West Wind’s 62 wind turbines can generate up to 143 megawatts of electricity - enough for roughly 73,000 average New Zealand homes!

During the visit, members will tour the site to view a wind turbine up close, visit operational areas including the substation, and hear from Meridian’s experts about how wind energy is generated, managed and integrated into New Zealand’s electricity market.

The tour also offers spectacular views across Wellington, Cook Strait and the South Island on a clear day.

Please note that the site visit is weather dependent. To ensure the safety and enjoyment of all participants, Meridian reserves the right to cancel the tour if weather conditions are unsuitable.

The bus departs from Wellington Station at 1pm and will take delegates to West Wind Farm. The group will be taken on a site tour and see a detailed presentation. The bus will return to the station at 4pm.
